We are excited because this year is New Ulm’s first annual Christkindlmarkt (kris-kindle-mart) and it will be held on Friday, November 23, 2012, from Noon to 8 pm on Center Street. It is a Christmas festival and street marketplace that will showcase handmade works and performances by local artisans. As a new community event, it’s intent is to foster arts and heritage, revive cultural traditions and promote family values. In general, the event was created to spread good will and refocus on the spirit of the coming holidays.
Inspired by childhood memories of the Christkindlmarkts in Europe – the oldest in Nuremberg, Germany, which began in 1545 – the idea was conceived to bring this tradition to New Ulm. Visual artisans will sell hand crafted wares in festive tents. Children and parents can participate in German and Scandinavian activities. Performances by music and theatre artists will be held throughout the day and traditional European holiday foods will be served. There will also be a live Nativity. At 6 p.m. is the parade of lights that will travel down Minnesota Street.
At the Deutsche Strasse Bed & Breakfastwe are excited to have this new event take on the ambiance of a true German town during the holiday season. Come and stay with us Thanksgiving night and Friday night to be able to enjoy at a relaxed pace these fun and exciting events.
